1 Preference for Novelty and Price Behaviour

چکیده
In this paper we motivate a specific formulation for preference that exhibits both love for variety and love for novelty. This enables to investigate the effects of ageing of imperfect substitutes, as they became progressively old-fashioned, due to the obsolescence of their aesthetic features. First, we assume that the industry is divided into several sub-markets, each dominated by a single firm that produces a variety of a given vintage. We show that equilibrium prices decrease, as goods become older. Assuming a fixed cost to be paid, the evolution of demand determines the equilibrium number of varieties at the point where the oldest vintage firm earns zero profits. Second, we consider the model under a free entry condition assumption. Each sub-market of a given vintage is saturated with a number of varieties such that the market share of each firm is barely sufficient to realise zero profits. We show in a particular case that, in equilibrium, markets of the youngest varieties are characterised by a larger number of firms than markets offering older varieties. More specifically, the lifetime horizon of each variety will be characterised by decreasing prices accompanied by increasing demand levels. JEL Classification: D43, L11, L13

Consumers’ Preference for Cowpea in Nigeria
The study investigates consumers’ preference for cowpea reflected in the Nigerian markets through price discounts and premiums that consumers pay for different cowpea characteristics. The price data used for this study were obtained through a market survey. A common data collection protocol was employed. Every month, between October 2009 to December 2010, five cowpea samples per seller were bou...
متن کاملDistinguishing Novelty and Familiarity Effects in Infant Preference Procedures
This paper considers possible problems researchers might face when interpreting the results of studies that employ variants of the preference procedure. Infants show a tendency to shift their preference from familiar to novel stimuli with increasing exposure to the familiar stimulus, a behaviour that is exploited by the habituation paradigm. This change in attentional preference with exposure l...
متن کاملExploring Visual Selective Attention towards Novel Stimuli in Alzheimer's Disease Patients
BACKGROUND Alzheimer's disease (AD) is associated with selective attention impairments, which could contribute to cognitive and functional deficits. Selective attention can be explored through examination of novelty preference. AIMS In this study, we quantified novelty preference in AD patients by measuring visual scanning behaviour using an eye tracking paradigm. METHODS Mild-to-moderate A...
متن کاملEffects of suppressing gonadal hormones on response to novel objects in adolescent rats
Human adolescents exhibit higher levels of novelty-seeking behaviour than younger or older individuals, and novelty-seeking is higher in males than females from adolescence onwards. Gonadal hormones, such as testosterone and estradiol, have been suggested to underlie age and sex difference in response to novelty; however, empirical evidence in support of this hypothesis is limited. Here, we inv...
متن کاملEffects of range condition on the temporal diet selection by goats in steppe rangelands of Iran
One of the key factors in managing a rangeland is to determine the relative preference of its major plant species by thegrazing livestock. Preference value of each plant species is affected by plant type, companion plants, availability byanimals, phenological stage, climate condition, and the livestock species. We investigated the grazing behaviour of anative goat (Garizi) in the steppe rangela...
